Darren Hayman – January Songs

http://januarysongs.tumblr.com/
Darren Hayman has decided to write, record and release a song everyday during January 2011. Every song will be released as a high quality download and will be be completely free for a limited period of time.’It’s an experiment to see what will happen to my creativity. Being a musician is essentially an easy job and even though I consider I work hard I wanted to see what would occur when I imposed a strict discipline on my songwriting’.’I’m not expecting every song to be good or successful but I am expecting the imposed time restrictions to lead me somewhere unlikely and exciting. I have decided to release the songs for free because I also didn’t want any commercial considerations to spoil the party’. ‘I’m also tired of trying to work out how to make money from music. New fan funding sites have broken my heart with what they have persuaded musicians to sell. I thought I’d give it away and see what happens’.’I’m expecting to have the time of my life. I get to do my favourite thing every day all day’.’I’ve got a lot of my friends to help me out; The Wave Pictures, Terry Edwards, Allo Darlin, The Voluntary Butler Scheme and Ballboy as well as total strangers and musicians across the globe in virtual link ups. Trumpets, harps, saws, synthesizers, saxophones and Spanish Flamenco bands are all due to appear’.’As well as writing the songs I will draw, write and film throughout the days. Pages of my journal will be scanned and appear at http://januarysongs.tumblr.com/ alongside mini movies and the actual songs’. ‘On the 6th and the 30th Jan I plan to play live shows where I will play that day’s song. On 11th Jan I will broadcast that day’s song on Resonance FM’.

live in session:  William D Drake

the ‘sHRiMP welcomes back the legendary William D Drake for at least his 4th session (going back over 7 years) – we will be having a chat with Bill about his forthcoming (4th?) solo album (due early 2011) & he will be performing live on the Resonance piano (thanks to Markson Pianos).

two guest features this week;

we are well pleased to welcome Irmin Schmidt in to the Resonance studio; Irmin should need no introduction to listeners but here goes (briefly) for those that do.
Irmin Schmidt, born Berlin 1937, was keyboard player & founder member of German-rock legends Can (1968-1979, 1986 & 1991). Like his Can co-founder Holger Czukay he was a student of Karlheinz Stockhausen, going on to work in the 60s as a conductor, concert pianist & then composer of (mainly) film music. Outside of Can he has produced a number of solo records, an opera & soundtracks to over 50 films.

Cassette Special side 2

following the success of our cassette only show back in March which explored cassette only releases; we have flipped the tape over and now present you side2.

once again we welcome Philip Marshall (one of Tapeworm) as our special guest

the Head’s vintage leatherette cassette case is bulging with the ferric outputs from Scotch Tapes (Super Vacations), Mantile (Johnny Scarr, Fossils), No Basement Deep Enough (Preggy Peggy and the Lazy Babymakers), Flying Nun (the Clean), Lal Lal Lal (Anaksimandros, Maniacs Dream, ‘Kuolleena Haudattuja’ compilation), Morc Tapes (Remora, Drekka, John Merrick Band, Celesteville), Boa (Electroscope), Kylie (Father, Crayola Summer, Fibo-Trespo, ‘Deliberately Lo-Fi’ compilation), JM-Tapes (Institute for Sonic Ponderance) and that’s without getting to S.O.U.L. and many others! i think this is going to be one of those multi-cassette pack things.

Bipasha’s plastic carrier bag of cassettes will contain a few things from cassette-only labels Deception Island, Scumbag Relations and 2AM tapes amongst other bits and pieces.
